What You Should Know About Eco-friendly, Sustainable Homessolar panels on NJ home

Whether you are trying to save money or the environment, there is definitely something to be said about a “green” or eco-friendly home. Before you begin imagining caves or hobbit holes, green homes are a lot more common than you think. In fact in New Jersey there are approximately 62,172 ENERGY STAR certified homes that have been constructed, and most look like ordinary homes. If you were to drive down a neighborhood with a green home, you probably couldn’t even pick it out. That is until you see the roof solar panels or the small wind turbines.

Are they expensive?

The answer to that question is it depends. Sure there are plenty of eco-friendly homes that have high price tags, but there are plenty that do not. Eco-friendly homes might be a bit more expensive than ordinary homes, but they also save the occupants money. Green homes come with energy efficient appliances, solar panels, wind turbines or geothermal energy, either way they goal is to be more energy efficient. The less money you spend on energy, the more money you will have in your pocket. Many homeowners are even beginning the process of transforming their house into an eco-friendly home. Besides, eco-friendly homes have a higher resale value than traditional homes.

What makes a home eco-friendly?

One of the best methods of making a home eco-friendly is by using reclaimed materials. That’s right, reclaimed wood is more eco-friendly than bamboo because you don’t have to ship it from another part of the world. Reclaimed wood can be used for flooring and wall treatments. Green homes also have high end energy efficient windows and insulation. The idea is to keep cold air in during the summer or hot air in during the winter. Eco-friendly homes also use a lot of recycled material. Decking can be made from composite wood and newspaper materials, roofing from recycled rubber, and carpets from recycled plastic bottles.
