Monroe Township is located in the southern part of Middlesex County New Jersey, bordering Monmouth and Mercer counties. Originally settled in the mid-1600's, Monroe Township was named for President James Monroe and is a semi-rural area. Its forty-three square mile area can be found approximately halfway between New York City and Philadelphia and is in close proximity to Princeton University and Rutgers, the State University in New Brunswick.

Monroe Township's character began to change in 1970 when the first of many large retirement communities was built. These retirement communities doubled the population of Monroe to over 24,000. However, Monroe has retained its semi-rural character thanks to the hard work of Township officials and residents.

Recently, there has been a surge of development in Monroe Township with many new communities being built. If you are planning to relocate to central New Jersey, Monroe Township should be high on your list of communities to investigate and consider.
