Places to Swim in Toms River, New Jerseyman relaxing at a pool in Toms River, NJ

Toms River is a popular Jersey Shore destination for visitors from other parts of the state as well as out of state. Now that the warm weather is here and school is out for the summer, families are heading down the shore to spend days swimming, boating, walking the boardwalk, and relaxing on the beach.

If you are heading to Toms River this summer, know where to swim before you go. Toms River offers many different swimming settings like indoor and outdoor pools, the Barnegat Bay, the Toms River, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Ocean County YMCA

The Ocean County YMCA offers two swimming pools as well as a large fitness center and organized classes and activities for people of all ages. The YMCA also offers summer camps for children and swimming lessons for adults and children to become proficient swimmers in a safe, supportive environment.

Shelter Cove

Shelter Cove is located on Toms River’s east coast where the Barnegat Bay and the Toms River meet. It is not far from Cattus Island County Park, an educational center with seven miles of trails and 530 acres of preserved open space. Shelter Cove Park offers swimming in the bay and a playground for children. Individuals with Toms River beach badges can access this park.

Toms River Country Club

At Toms River Country Club, members and visitors enjoy an Olympic-sized outdoor swimming pool with an adjacent snack bar. Swimming packages are popular with summer shore visitors. Toms River Country Club offers swimming lessons for children as young as two years old. Members have access to social functions at the club as well.

Island Heights Beach

Although Island Heights is technically a separate municipality from Toms River, it is completely surrounded by the larger township. At Island Heights Beach, visitors can enjoy swimming and boating in the Toms River and walking along the small boardwalk along the Toms River. Beach badges can be purchased from the town.

Ortley Beach

Individuals with Toms River beach badges can go to Ortley Beach to enjoy swimming in the ocean. Toms River badges cannot be used at any beaches other than Ortley Beach and Shelter Cove. This is the only ocean beach in Toms River. Toms River residents can also go to nearby Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, and Lavallette, but these beaches require badges from their respective towns.
