Monroe Township is located in the southern part of Middlesex County New Jersey, bordering Monmouth and Mercer counties. Originally settled in the mid-1600's, the township was named for President James Monroe and is a semi-rural area. Its 43 square mile area is the largest municipality in Middlesex County in terms of total land area. Monroe Twp is approximately halfway between New York City and Philadelphia and is in close proximity to Princeton University and Rutgers, the State University in New Brunswick. The Major medical facilities in the area are Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, St Peters Medical Center, and Princeton Hospital.
Over the past years, Monroe has had a surge in new residential luxury developments along Applegarth and Federal Road, and one along the Millstone River called the Millstone Preserve.
Exciting things are happening in the Monroe Township school district! There is an ongoing expansion of the Monroe Township High School that is relocating onto portions of Thompson Park. The new high school is scheduled to open in September of 2011, and then the existing structure will be used for the Middle School.
Monroe Township boasts a large number of Active Adult Communities, and is centrally located with easy access to the New Jersey Turnpike, and local bus stops to catch a bus to New York City.

Monroe Township is also rich in culture, with The Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission offering activities emphasizing music, art, literature, drama and dance by and for the citizens of Monroe Township, and a new, expanded library.
